Next Level 8: “Storytellers”

Our aim with this issue was to create a transparent design, using blocks of colour and text to highlight the versatility of the 5-column grid, so that the viewer can see how the magazine has been designed. All notes, picture credits and captions appear far left and right in the margins throughout the magazine.

As this issue showcased photography in filmmaking and filmmaking itself, we based the colour palette on technicolour and grayscale bars/slates, used in filmmaking. The articles were divided into colour or grayscale, depending on which was more sympathetic to the images of that particular article.

The colour articles used FS Clerkenwell Italic caps for all the headings and Frutiger light as the body copy, while the grayscale articles used FS Clerkenwell Light upper and lower case as the headings and body text throughout.

To ensure that there was a pace and energy to the magazine, whilst still letting the images breathe, the articles run alternately throughout the magazine, with grayscale following colour.

Not only is Next Level acknowledged for its content, but also for its innovative design and attention to detail. The content is paramount and we were aware that the photography and images “need to do the talking” rather than the design. The aesthetic is sympathetic to the content.
